Why The 'I' In 'Writer' Sucks

*waves hello* Amparo reporting for duty today!

(yes, I have a weird name. Parents in YA are not the only ones with issues...)

Okay. For my first post e-vah, I'm going to start with a statement you all should remember: writers rock.

Why?

Here’s my take: the word ‘awesome’ gets thrown around quite often. If you want to make someone pay attention to something you love, tell them it’s awesome. Not that you think it’s awesome, or what makes it awesome to you, but that it’s just plain awesome in general. Then see how that person reacts.

Reaction #1: “Really? Oh, well… Guess I’ll go check it out…”

Reaction #2: “Really???? OMG, that sounds SO AWESOME!! Why didn’t I know about it??” *slaps forehead twenty times*

If reaction #2 occurs, proceed with caution to the nearest exit. You are in the presence of a Norman Bates clone.

Either way, you’ve just pushed that person into whatever it is you want them to discover. The thing gets noticed, and you gain an ally in the gushing department. Double win.

I know, I know. What the heck does this have to do with writers, Amparo? Simple: writers are awesome because they do this exact thing. Spread the word. Reach out to those who don’t know. Push those who want to get better, or are thisclose to quitting.

Even simpler? Writers support. They are a team. A network. An entire world.

So the next time someone tells you something is awesome, put them in their place and say: “Really? Well, guess what? You suck at life! Writers are the only ones who deserve to be called awesome!!!”

Okay, okay. You can take out the ‘you suck at life’ part. Don’t want any bar brawls or anything…

There you go. Writers are awesome because they support each other. They don’t live in a vacuum. That ‘I’ in writer? Don’t ever believe it’s all it takes. Sure, you may be awesome all by yourself, but it’s easier to climb a hill when others are pushing you up.

‘Nuff said.

Now tell me, blogging buddies: what makes a writer awesome to you???

  1. But there's also a WE in Writer, with I in the middle. And also a RT, which explains why we like retweets. Hmm, I might be overthinking this.

  2. hi mr amparo! that was a cool post for sure. being a support for each other is the best thing we could do not just for writing but for lots of stuff. on my blog i got the writers oath from a book i won and on number 3 you gotta promise to nurture the writing of others. my blogger writer friends are a real help for me mostly because im a beginner writer. they make me want to write more and learn more.

  3. Great post! If I've learned anything, it's that the writing community is supportive of each other. :)

  4. This post is awesome!! I heart your voice, Amparo! So fun to read.

LOL @ Kelly about RT in writer. I do love me some retweets. :-)

Lenny, I remember your writers oath! It's something we should all commit to memory.

Elana, love your new author photo! (at least, it's new to me) I'm overwhelmed by the amazing spirit of support in the writing community. So yeah. Definitely ditto to what you said.

I think in the end nobody will be able to say they did it by themselves...and, really, who would want to?

  5. Great post Amparo! I think what makes an author awesome is their ability to put themselves out there...keep trying no matter what.

  6. Couldn't agree more! We don't know what we would do without the support of fellow writers. It's like nothing we've ever experienced!

  8. Thanks, girls! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks writers should stick together. Reaching out can change lives. It certainly has changed mine :)

  9. I know I wouldn't be half the writer than I am without my online support community.
