Gail sat staring out the window at the snow-covered trees, her mind skipping through images in slow-motion.
ReplyDelete“Pretty out today, isn’t it?”
She turned to look at who spoke. An old man stood next to her chair with daisies clutched in his gnarled hands.
“Yes, sir,” she whispered. “Sure is. I love it when it snows.” She raised a veiny hand to her hair, smiling shyly.
The man’s eyebrows crumpled. “May I sit with you a spell?”
Gail nodded her grayed head and gestured to the chair next to her. “Where’d you get daisies this time of year?” she asked him. “I just love daisies.”
“Kroger,” he said, shoulders slumping further. “Shall I put them with the others?”
The woman turned and stared where he gestured. Brows furrowed, she nodded and watched as the man pulled withered ones out of the vase before adding his fresh ones, dropping the tired flowers into the waste basket onto yesterday’s dried up daisies.
When he was done, he sat and gazed at her with watery eyes. She had turned back to the window, but a smile lit up her face.
“Oh look, it snowed!” she said, “How pretty!”
Love it! Reminds me of the Notebook.
