Unrequited Love

I was over at The Naked Hero this week talking about unrequited love. There are so many great examples out there - A Tale of Two Cities; The Last of the Mohicans; Andrew Lincoln's character Mark from "Love Actually" who was in love with Kiera Knightly's character. And of course, one of my favorites, Severus Snape.

I, of course, love the unrequited love stories that end with the love finally being reciprocated, but some of the most beautiful stories do not have such a happy ending (the original Little Mermaid anyone?)

What is your favorite unrequited love tale?

At the risk of tomatoes thrown at me, I'm going with Jacob Black. :)

Unrequited love stories hurt my heart unless they end with the love being reciprocated! Twilight was different because... well, it turns out the whole time Jacob was merely attracted to her egg, not Bella. :)

I'd have to say the original Little Mermaid story because when I actually heard it, it broke my heart.

Phantom of the Opera, for me. Doesn't get much more heart rending than that.

Oh God, My Best Friend's Wedding had me weeping for days! Most likely because I love Julia Roberts, but still...I always wished Michael reciprocated Julianne's feelings.

Who could forget Scarlett and Rhett? So many times I wanted to scream, "What in the world do you see in Ashley Wilkes? Wake up, Scarlett! Wake up!"

I'm showing my dinosaur tastes, but just about any film with Lon Chaney, Sr. that features unrequited love. It actually felt weird to watch one of Lon's early films (from 1919) where he actually was a romantic lead and got the girl. I was so used to having my heartstrings tugged by watching him lose the girl he secretly pines for.
