This week is Friends of the Library Week!

The third week of October is Friends of the Library Week.

What is Friends of the Library?  It’s a non-profit group of volunteers organized to assist libraries in the community.  In addition to advocating for the library at the local and state level, the most visible thing the Friends usually do is operate a bookstore and/or conduct book fairs – selling gently used books and other materials [either retired from the library shelves or donated by library patrons] to help raise money for the purchase of equipment, furniture, special events, and new books and other materials for circulation.

Does your local library have a Friends group?  My library does, and they operate a bookstore in a room at the library plus sponsor the Summer Reading Program and various programs and events throughout the year.  For Friends of the Library Week, consider starting or joining your local Friends group, or at least visit the bookstore and buy a book!
