Dear O'Abby: What's the best giveaway?

 Dear O'Abby,

I have a book coming out soon, and have a fairly substantial blog tour scheduled to promote it.  Some of the hosts have asked if they can do a giveaway as part of the promotion and I was wondering if you had any advice about what might be best to give away in this scenario.

Best,

Prize Challenged

Dear Prize Challenged,

What a great question!  And something that is very top-of-mind for me right now because I have a book releasing this week.

My first piece of advice would be not to offer the book you're promoting as a prize.  At least not in too many places.  You want to sell that book, and if you give it away, you're potentially losing a sale you might have had.

But don't despair!  There are lots of other things you can give away that won't break the bank.

If you have other books, you could offer one or more of these back catalogue titles as a prize. A winner may love the book you send so much they rush out to buy the new one.  And hopefully the rest of your back catalogue too!

If you don't have back catalogue books, deleted scenes or stories set in the same world as your book can also be a great prize.  Especially if they aren't available anywhere else.  People like to feel that they are getting something unique or special and will value something exclusive far more that something a lot of people have access to.

They say someone has to see your cover seven or more times to remember it, so getting branded swag made with your book cover, website address and purchasing information is a valuable tool for getting the word out.  You can get bookmarks, badges and other swag printed fairly cheaply.  I'm always a big fan of magnets too.  People go to their fridges a lot, and if your magnet is attached, they see your book cover several times a day, even if they're not conscious they're looking at it. Be imaginative about the kind of swag you create.  Tote bags are always handy, and if your readers are out and about, your book cover on a bag could be catching a lot of eyes.

Your book may have a very specific image or symbol that could be made into a brooch or earrings or other piece of jewellery or ornament.  If these are limited in number, they are even more valuable.

Another thing you can offer is the opportunity for your winners to be in your next book - promise to name a character after them.  This is doubly effective, because if they're promised a character, you've probably already sold them your next book.

If you're not shy or phone-phobic, you can offer your winners an opportunity to speak to you on the phone or via Zoom or Skype.  You may want to make it clear ahead of time how long you are willing to talk, and if there are subjects you don't want to discuss, put that up front too.

With so much modern communication happening online these days, getting a hand-written letter in the mail is really special.  Offer to hand-write a letter or postcard to a contest winner.

And anything you can autograph, do.  You may not believe your signature is worth anything, but to your readers is might be.  Especially if you can personalize the autograph to the person who will be receiving it.  Obviously this isn't always possible, especially if, like me, you're living in a remote location where shipping signed books can cost a small fortune, and it's easier to get prizes sent to the recipient directly from a retailer.  But you can create book plates that can be emailed to the prize winner so when their copy arrives, they can print it on a sticker or glue the bookplate into the front of the book.

That's a few ideas.  At the end of the day, your imagination is the limit.  Just don't go overboard when it comes to spending money. A lot of promotion can be done very cheaply, and the most valuable giveaways are often the things that only cost you your time.

Good luck with your release!

X O'Abby

Bookplates the Inexpensive Way

I'm going to an event cross-country in Nashville, UtopYA Con, and one of the things that's been stressing out all of the authors attending is how many books to bring with us to sell and/or sign. Bring too few and you'll be turning people away empty-handed, and bring too many and you'll have to decide whether to pay shipping home (or take up your valuable suitcase space again).

I will be bringing my guesstimated amount of 40 books, but I still have that nagging fear that I'll run out and miss out on some fans. My solution was bookplates that I can sign and hand out, and the more I thought about it, the more I liked that idea.

If a fan has already bought an e-book of Crow's Rest, this is a way for them to have something physical to take away. Or if they're not buying my book that day (there is a very longs list of authors who will be signing, and let's face it, no one can buy every book), they can buy a copy later from the retailer of their choice and stick the bookplate in there. Voila, signed copy!

I looked around for some good prices on bookplates, but since I'm already paying for buttons to give out, as well as the transient vendor license that Nashville requires*, my budget was really tight. I wasn't able to find any that were within my budget, so I designed my own bookplates to print on my ink jet printer.

It obviously helps if you have some design skills and access to your book art, but you could make some pretty sharp bookplates with stock images. For the technical-minded, my image dimensions are 3.55x2.663 inches at 300 dpi to fit on the Avery 6464. Even with the cost of the ink figured in, I estimate that these will cost me about .15/each!

These are also great if someone out of my area wants a signed copy--instead of them sending me their copy to sign, and then me having to ship it back again, I can send them a signed bookplate instead.

What do you think? Are you going to give these a try?

*A lot of us were caught by surprise by the $112 transient vendor fee that Nashville requires to sell items, even if you're selling as part of an event like this con. Make sure you always check for these license requirements when you're thinking of selling your books out of your county (if you have a business license, you're covered in your county) because getting caught without one can mean fines.

Artistry for Authors

It's been just over a year since I started making my miniature book charms for authors, and it's been an amazing experience! I've met so many wonderful people in the process.

I think it has something to do with my clients being in the final stages of a book. It's the stage when you are DONE with all the nit-picky editing and the cover is finalized...when it's time for getting fun presents and swag items for contests and celebrations. The stage when you finally have something to show for all that hard work you've put in, and you can finally start showing off a finished product!

No one knows better than an author (or perhaps an involved spouse), how much time and effort goes into the creation of a single book. I'm so proud of all the people who've endured the process to the end, and THANK YOU for letting me be part of the celebrations. :-)

Check out the brand New Blog (especially the gallery of charming clients!) and 'like' my Facebook Fan Page for special announcements and offers.

If you're going to BEA 2015, stay tuned for a special deal on these mini booklets! (Features your front/back cover and approximately the first thousand words of your novel)

Don't you love swag?
I think it ranks right up there with "The End," "Send me a full ms," and, "You have a deal."

BE PROUD of your accomplishments and show it off to the world!

Mini-Book Charms for Authors

Ever get sucked into something different while you sit around and wait for the publishing industry? Well, that happened to me just recently, thanks to fellow bloggers Angie and Michelle.

However, with their insistence and encouragement, I decided to take my little creative endeavor to the next level—and I opened an Etsy shop for these adorable mini-book charms.

I honestly have no idea how much work I just created for myself, but special thanks goes out to Michelle, Angie, and AJ for letting me play with their covers-- your charms are in the mail!

The first thing I want everyone to know is that these charms are ONLY made for authors/ publishers/ designers (not fans) who have permission to use the novel's cover art for marketing swag, etc. Much like having bookmarks or postcards made for giveaways.

Who wouldn't want to show off their book everywhere they go?

The charms make great jewelry, key chains, handbag/purse charms, ornaments, bookmarks, or lanyard decor for badges at speaking engagements, conventions, book fairs, book signings ... you name it!

Each charm is handcrafted with YOUR cover art on the front and back. If you don't have a back cover, I'll choose a color from the front and make a blank one for you. I'll also put your name on the spine.

~Acid-free pages are trimmed and layered to fit the dimensions of your cover. This book does NOT open when finished.

~High-gloss, color covers are glazed with acrylic gel for protection against normal wear-and-tear and water resistance (it's still paper.. can't be 100% waterproof).

~A small loop is securely embedded within the pages for extra durability.

~As for size, each book will vary depending on the format of your cover. But I'd say it's safe to expect something around 1" x 1.75" x .25". (I'm willing to go smaller if you plan to do a bracelet with multiple books of a series—just let me know!)

All charms will arrive ready for use, however, there are two variations: A simple charm by itself, or, a charm with extra bling added. (Bling would be theme charms and/or beads added to the mini-book, and either a ribbon/cord necklace to hang it on, a ball chain, or a lanyard (for you professional business types).

We can talk about focusing the extra bling on a theme, or I'll do my best to guess based on the style of the cover. I'll even run to the craft store if I don't have something that works perfectly. :-)

I'll offer a discount for volume if you want to keep some on hand for giveaways or merchandise on your website or blog- just ask.

Any questions? I'll answer here on the blog.
